Video calls are set to be introduced to the X platform in the near future, as confirmed by CEO Linda Yaccarino in a recent interview. The microblogging service, previously known as Twitter and now under the leadership of Elon Musk, is actively developing new features aimed at transforming X into an “everything app.” This functionality will enable users to engage in video calls without needing to disclose their phone numbers, which aligns with offerings from competitors such as Facebook and Instagram, where interactions are based on usernames.

In an interview with CNBC, Yaccarino stated that the platform will soon support video calling. “X users will have the ability to make video chat calls without having to give your phone number to anyone on the platform,” she explained. Furthermore, she indicated to CNBC that her role within the company operates with “autonomy” under Musk, marking a clear distinction in their responsibilities.

Last month, X employee Andrea Conway revealed two screenshots suggesting the user interface for X video calls on iOS. The first image depicts a phone receiver icon within a direct messages chat window, showcasing a pop-up menu with options for both audio and video calls. The second screenshot illustrates the video call interface, featuring four buttons: speaker, mute, video, and end call.

Despite the screenshots being over a month old, the final design of the video calling interface may differ by the time it is made available to users. Earlier this week, Conway noted on social media that she had successfully made a video call on X. However, neither Yaccarino nor Conway has indicated when this new feature will officially launch for users.

Back in June, Yaccarino suggested that X would prioritize video content, creator collaborations, and commerce partnerships to enhance its competitiveness within the social media landscape. Her earlier presentation revealed that over 10 percent of user engagement on what was then Twitter involved watching vertical videos.

Recently, X has also begun sharing advertising revenue with qualifying creators. An update from X’s support account announced a reduction in the eligibility criteria for revenue sharing, lowering the threshold from 15 million impressions over three months to 5 million. Additionally, users with an X Premium subscription—previously known as Twitter Blue—who meet these new requirements will now be eligible for minimum payouts of $10 (approximately Rs. 830), reduced from $50 (around Rs. 4,100).
