Amazon is reportedly preparing to enter the quick commerce market in India with a new instant delivery service known as ‘Tez.’ The service is expected to be launched by the end of this year or in early 2025, according to recent reports. Should Amazon make this move, it could challenge existing competitors such as Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, and Zepto.
Potential Competition in the Quick Commerce Scene
The Economic Times has indicated that Amazon India is advancing plans for the Tez delivery service, which may debut in late December or early next year.
The introduction of Tez would mark Amazon’s entry into the quick commerce space, which has been gaining traction in India. Initially, the company had aimed for a launch in the first quarter of next year but has since expedited its timeline. The service is anticipated to focus on groceries and essential daily items from the outset.
“Amazon aims to roll it out before the end of the first quarter in India. Quick commerce is a crucial area for any significant consumer internet platform right now. They are adopting a similar approach as others—establishing dark stores, refining stock-keeping units (SKUs) and categories, and building the necessary logistics framework,” a source familiar with the developments shared with the publication.
Details of the initiative are expected to be reviewed in the forthcoming monthly meeting set for the first week of December, prior to Amazon’s annual Smbhav 2024 event happening on December 9 and 10.
The company is also actively seeking talent for this venture and is working with logistics partners to facilitate rapid delivery services. The final branding for the service has yet to be confirmed.
The quick commerce sector in India is experiencing rapid growth, driven by established players like Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart. Other notable participants include Tata-owned BB Now and Flipkart’s Minutes. In a recent development, arch-rival Flipkart also introduced its own quick commerce service last month.
