Sony is reportedly set to return with a gaming showcase next month. This upcoming presentation is anticipated to be a State of Play broadcast rather than a full-scale PlayStation Showcase. The last State of Play event occurred in February, during which the company unveiled Saros, an action game developed by Housemarque.
Sony to Host Games Showcase in June
This information was shared by Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb, who previously noted in February that Sony was weighing the options between a full-length PlayStation Showcase and a State of Play event for this summer. In a recent episode of the Game Mess Mornings podcast, Grubb indicated that Sony is indeed planning a gaming presentation for June. It appears the company has chosen a State of Play format over a full Showcase.
Grubb mentioned he had not heard of any plans for a Sony event in May, suggesting that something significant is prepared for June.
“They are doing something in June. While I don’t think it will be a major Showcase, I mentioned a couple of months ago that there was internal debate about whether to proceed with a Showcase or a State of Play. It seems likely they have decided on a State of Play,” he explained.
Although Grubb expressed some uncertainty, he leans towards the idea of a State of Play in June.
“I’m not fully convinced about that aspect — it’s probably a State of Play — but I have indeed heard that something is planned for June.”
Anticipations for the State of Play
State of Play events tend to be concise, primarily focusing on third-party announcements along with updates on first-party titles. The previous State of Play in February featured trailers for third-party games such as MindsEye, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, and Tides of Annihilation. During that event, Sony also introduced Saros, the new project from the team behind Returnal.
Conversely, a PlayStation Showcase encompasses a wider range of announcements and emphasizes first-party titles. This larger event is typically hosted once a year, while State of Play broadcasts are held three to four times annually. The last PlayStation Showcase occurred in 2023, and Sony did not hold one in 2024, with indications suggesting they may skip it again in 2025.
Nonetheless, the company should have ample content to showcase next month. Several leading PlayStation studios are developing new projects, which have been confirmed. Naughty Dog is working on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and an additional unannounced title, Insomniac Games is developing Wolverine, and Sucker Punch is gearing up to release Ghost of Yotei, a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, in October 2025.
Insomniac has not provided updates on Wolverine since its announcement in 2021, and June’s presentation might reveal new information regarding this superhero title. Meanwhile, God of War developer Santa Monica has yet to disclose its upcoming project, but Grubb previously reported that the studio is working on a spin-off set in the original Greek mythology, potentially launching later this year.
During the podcast, Grubb hinted that Sony might be preparing for larger announcements.
“They are being quite discreet. Gaining details surrounding the June event was challenging, which leads me to believe there may be significant surprises,” Grubb speculated.
