WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature designed to enhance connectivity in group chats via live audio. The messaging platform, operated by Meta, now allows users to engage in voice conversations without having to exit the group or initiate a separate voice call. Previously restricted to larger groups, this functionality is now accessible across all chat groups. Importantly, these voice chats maintain the same end-to-end encryption standards as individual communications.
Voice Chats in WhatsApp
WhatsApp has stated that voice chats are now available to groups of any size. To initiate a voice chat, group members can scroll to the bottom of their chat and swipe up until the Swipe up to chat prompt appears. By holding this option for a few seconds, users will see Release to talk followed by a Connect option that activates the voice chat feature.
The messaging service mentions that when a voice chat starts, the other members are neither notified nor interrupted by a ringing sound. Participants can join or leave the conversation at their discretion. These voice chats will be conveniently pinned at the bottom of the chat window to facilitate easy access to control options. In addition, new members can join the ongoing voice chat at any time and see who else is participating.
Staying true to its robust privacy policies, WhatsApp ensures that voice chats are protected with default end-to-end encryption similar to that of personal calls and messages. The company emphasizes that it does not have the capability to access content from chats or voice communications.
Reports from Gadgets 360 confirm that the new feature is currently active on both Android and iOS platforms. However, it may take a few days before it becomes available to all users of the app, so some may not see it immediately.
This announcement follows recent findings of new features under development for WhatsApp, including options to select download quality for media auto-downloads, sticker reactions for messages and media, and on-device message translation using downloaded language packs.
