Google Chat has launched a new feature called ‘huddles,’ enabling users to initiate meetings quickly while in conversation with colleagues. This functionality provides a shortcut to start an audio call in a picture-in-picture mode. Users can also incorporate additional features, such as video conferencing or screen sharing, once other participants join the call. The huddles feature shares its name with a similar offering from competitor Slack and is designed to operate across both direct messages and group chats within Google Chat.
Integration of Google Chat Huddles in Direct Messages and Group Settings
The rollout of the huddles feature is currently underway for Google Chat users on Rapid Release domains, with full availability expected by December 20. Users on Scheduled Release domains will have to wait a bit longer, as the feature is slated to begin its rollout on January 6, 2025.

Users can begin huddles from direct messages, group messages, and spaces, with each session commencing as an audio call. Participants have the option to activate their video after joining, and features typically found on Google Meet, like screen sharing, will also be accessible during huddles.
Slack, a key competitor, has provided a similar huddle feature since 2021 and enhanced it a year later by allowing video integration. Users can utilize Slack’s huddles through both mobile and desktop applications.
Instructions for Initiating a Huddle on Google Chat
To start a huddle, users of Google Chat can simply click on the downward-facing arrow next to the call button in a direct message or group chat, then select Start a huddle. This action will trigger a compact picture-in-picture call in the bottom right corner of the screen, featuring options to mute, enable video (which is off by default), share screens, and end the call.
The huddle window is resizable, which proves beneficial when a participant is sharing their screen or using their camera. This picture-in-picture mode allows users to continue their conversations on Google Chat while actively engaged in the call, as per the company’s announcement.
