OpenAI has officially acquired io, an artificial intelligence hardware startup founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive, a deal announced on Wednesday. Shortly after the acquisition was made public, CEO Sam Altman shared details about a secretive AI device being developed in collaboration with Ive. According to reports, this innovative device will not resemble traditional smartphones or wearable technology like smartglasses. Altman expressed optimism that the device could significantly enhance OpenAI’s valuation and resonate with consumers. Sources indicate that the acquisition price was approximately $6.5 billion (around Rs. 55,850 crore).
Insights from Sam Altman on the New AI Device
The Wall Street Journal reported that during an internal communication, Altman disclosed insights into the AI device being created with Ive. A recording of the meeting revealed that OpenAI plans to produce “100 million AI companions” intended to seamlessly integrate into users’ daily routines.
Altman hinted that the device will be contextually aware, capable of understanding the user’s environment and personal life. This suggests it may include cameras or sensors and will likely have Internet connectivity to gather information about its users through integration with various applications.
The OpenAI CEO emphasized that the device will be designed to be unobtrusive and easily portable, suitable for placement on a desk. This aligns with earlier reports suggesting it could be screenless, hinting at a design comparable in size to a smartphone—consistent with earlier speculations.
Moreover, Altman indicated that the device would serve as the “third core device a person would place on their desk,” positioning it alongside a MacBook Pro and an iPhone. This suggests the AI device may fulfill a distinct role separate from what smartphones or laptops provide.
Despite speculation about it being a wearable akin to other emerging devices like the Humane AI Pin or Rabbit R1, Altman clarified during the call that this new device would not be glasses or any item intended for physical wear.
Further specifics about the device remain undisclosed, but Altman hinted that this acquisition could pave the way for a series of devices that might elevate OpenAI’s valuation to $1 trillion (approximately Rs. 85.65 lakh crore).
