Fujifilm is set to expand its X-series lineup with the introduction of a compact camera model dubbed the X Half, which is expected to launch in late June. This innovative piece of equipment boasts an 18-megapixel “half-frame” sensor, designed in a portrait orientation, paired with a fixed 32mm-equivalent f/2.8 lens.

While it operates as a digital camera, the X Half is crafted to evoke a nostalgic film experience. Priced at $849.99, it features a secondary screen dedicated to selecting from 13 distinct film simulations. Users will only be able to capture images in JPG format, foregoing the RAW option to emphasize a straightforward, analog-like shooting experience.

The term “half-frame” is redefined by Fujifilm in this context. Traditionally, a half-frame camera, like the Pentax 17, captures images with a 18mm x 24mm format, approximately half the dimensions of standard 35mm film. In contrast, the X Half employs a 1-inch-type sensor measuring 8.8mm x 13.3mm, roughly half the size of the APS-C sensors found in models such as the X100VI and X-T5.

The X Half will be offered in silver, gray, and black variants.

Similar to traditional half-frame models like the Pentax 17, the X Half focuses on capturing spontaneous and enjoyable moments, making it convenient to carry along. Tipping the scales at only 8.5 ounces (240 grams), it easily fits in small bags or larger pockets. This model shares dimensions comparable to a typical disposable camera, yet it is equipped with an optical glass lens that offers autofocus capabilities, along with the ability to record basic 1080 x 1440 video. Fujifilm’s Justin Stailey mentioned the lens possesses “some character,” a subjective phrase often signaling that it may not provide the sharpest images.

Shots taken can be framed through the X Half’s conventional optical viewfinder, or its portrait-oriented 2.4-inch touchscreen. A specialized smartphone app, which will roll out shortly after the camera’s release, will offer additional functionalities. Users can assemble diptychs reminiscent of traditional photography—selecting their desired images to arrange side by side or combining stills with videos.

The app includes various analog-themed features, such as a Film Camera Mode designed to compile a defined number of images into a contact sheet, mimicking classic film photography. The digital display will reflect the film simulation utilized during shooting, adding to the nostalgic effect. A faux film advance lever allows users to interact with the photo-taking process, requiring its engagement after capturing each image in Film Camera Mode.

Additionally, users have the option to apply fun filters, including light leaks, a vintage film aesthetic, or a retro time and date stamp, directly to their photos. However, since the camera only saves images in JPG format, these filters cannot be modified or removed post-capture, differentiating this model from those that allow RAW file usage.

Fujifilm aims to attract a younger demographic of photography enthusiasts who have recently shown interest in the charm and quirks of vintage analog and early digital cameras. While the $850 price point may deter some in favor of cheaper alternatives, such as $70 digital options like the Camp Snap or low-cost disposable cameras, the X Half seeks to deliver a unique shooting experience, potentially providing an enjoyable avenue for creative exploration.
