During the I/O 2025 developer conference held in California, Google announced a significant expansion of its AI Overviews feature, which will now be accessible in over 200 countries and support more than 40 languages. This enhancement allows users in various regions to receive information in their native languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Malay, and Urdu, providing quick summaries of searched topics.
Expansion of AI Overviews
In a blog post, Google detailed the upgrades to AI Overviews. The feature enhances users’ ability to ask questions and swiftly access information, presenting brief topic summaries alongside external links for further exploration. Incorporating the capabilities of the Gemini large language model (LLM), it employs multi-step reasoning to address search queries effectively.
Originally launched in public access at the Google I/O 2024 event, AI Overviews began its journey with a limited rollout in the US through Search Labs. Following its broader release in more territories over recent months, there has been a noticeable 10 percent increase in usage for specific queries that showcase AI Overviews, with users in the US and India being particularly active.
Alongside the expansion, Google is also introducing modifications to the LLM that underpins the feature. Starting this week, a customized version of Gemini 2.5 will power AI Overviews specifically for Google Search in the United States. As Google’s most advanced AI model to date, it aims to handle more intricate queries. However, the company continues to urge caution, noting that AI-generated responses may still contain inaccuracies.
