The highly praised action-RPG, Elden Ring, developed by FromSoftware, has regained attention following the debut of its first and final major expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree. This downloadable content (DLC) is filled with new features and challenging boss encounters, enticing players to revisit the game. The resurgence of interest surrounding Elden Ring, spurred by the expansion’s critical acclaim and commercial success, has ignited conversations about a potential film or television adaptation. Game director Hidetaka Miyazaki has previously mentioned that there is existing “interest” in bringing Elden Ring to screen post-release of the expansion. Moreover, George R.R. Martin, the renowned fantasy author who contributed to the game’s world-building, has hinted at the possibility of a film or series based on Elden Ring.
Hints of an Elden Ring Adaptation
On June 29, Martin teased an Elden Ring adaptation in a blog post, where he jokingly pretended to be unaware of any ongoing projects. “Oh, and about those rumors you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on ELDEN RING… I have nothing to say,” he wrote. “Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, mum mum mum. What rumor?” he added, maintaining an air of mystery.
Martin’s playful hints are in line with comments from Hidetaka Miyazaki, who indicated his openness to the idea of adapting Elden Ring for other media. In an interview with The Guardian, published shortly after the release of the DLC, Miyazaki stated, “I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example.”
He continued, “However, I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play. We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, but there’s interest, for sure,” underscoring the potential for future collaborations.
Nebula Award Recognition for Elden Ring
George R.R. Martin, known for his A Song of Ice and Fire series that was adapted into the HBO series Game of Thrones, played a crucial role in crafting the lore and world of Elden Ring. In his recent blog, he also acknowledged the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers Association’s Nebula Award for Game Writing, awarded to Elden Ring last year. “I did the worldbuilding for that project; Hidetaka Miyazaki and his team did all the rest. We were both honored with trophies,” Martin expressed in his post.
The Shadow of the Erdtree expansion launched on June 21 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X, quickly becoming the highest-rated DLC on Metacritic. Despite some player critiques regarding its challenging nature, the expansion continues to capture the attention of fans and newcomers alike.
