On Thursday, Qualcomm introduced its latest mobile platform, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 SoC. This new chipset replaces the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 and incorporates a variety of Snapdragon Elite Gaming features. Manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 4nm process technology, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 also boasts a range of artificial intelligence capabilities. Notably, it can support Gen AI assistants and popular large language models (LLMs) directly on-device. The SoC features a main core operating at a clock speed of 2.8GHz, along with connectivity options that include Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0. New smartphones from Honor and Vivo featuring this chipset are set to launch later this month.

Qualcomm Introduces Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 SoC

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 is a mid-range processing unit that leverages TSMC’s 4nm process technology and adheres to a 64-bit architecture. It consists of one prime core achieving speeds of up to 2.8GHz, four performance cores running at 2.4GHz, and three efficiency cores that peak at 1.8GHz. The chipset includes an Adreno GPU and a Qualcomm Spectra Image Signal Processor (ISP).

Qualcomm claims that the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 SoC elevates camera and gaming experiences while enhancing on-device AI performance through Qualcomm AI Engines. Users can expect 27 percent faster CPU performance and a 30 percent improvement in GPU graphics rendering compared to its predecessor. Additionally, the new chip is said to deliver a remarkable 65 percent boost in AI capabilities over the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3.

Maintaining the legacy of previous Snapdragon chipsets, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 incorporates Snapdragon Sound technology. It features the Qualcomm Expanded Personal Area Network (XPAN) technology alongside the Aqstic audio codec, enabling playback of various audio formats. The chipset also includes select Snapdragon Elite Gaming features like Qualcomm Game Quick Touch, Triple ISP capabilities, and Snapdragon Adaptive Game Configuration.

Other notable specifications include a Hexagon NPU that supports INT4, INT8, and INT16 precision, along with the Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF system. To enhance connectivity, it employs the Qualcomm FastConnect Mobile Connectivity System, which provides support for Wi-Fi 7, Wi-Fi 6/5, and Bluetooth 6.0. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 is compatible with LP-DDR5x RAM operating at speeds of 4,200MHz and supports various storage versions, including UFS 4.0, UFS 3.1, and UFS 2.

This new mobile chipset is equipped with AI-driven features such as auto focus, auto white balance, and auto exposure for both photos and videos. Moreover, it supports electronic image stabilization (EIS) and can capture up to 4K resolution HDR video at 30 frames per second.

The chipset, identified by its part number SM7750-AB, is set to be used in upcoming devices from Honor and Vivo, with market availability anticipated later this month. The yet-to-be-released Honor 400 is expected to be the first smartphone to feature the new chip.
