On Wednesday, Samsung kicked off its Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event, unveiling the highly anticipated Galaxy S25 series alongside a host of new artificial intelligence (AI) advancements. The South Korean technology leader described the latest iteration of its flagship devices as a “true AI companion,” emphasizing that the updated One UI 7 operating system has been tailored for enhanced AI functionalities. The integration of AI features is extensive, providing users with a seamless experience across their devices. Below are the key AI enhancements introduced during the event.

New Galaxy AI Features Announced by Samsung

Now Brief is being heralded as Samsung’s initial ecosystem-based AI feature. This functionality offers users insights into their daily device usage and activities, presenting the information in a card-based interface. Examples highlighted during the presentation included a morning insights card encompassing a weather forecast and energy score, as well as distinct cards for commuting and workouts. Activities tracked within these features draw data from the Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring.

Samsung also unveiled Now Bar, a quick-view feature accessible from the lock screen that displays insights from Now Brief. This feature consists of a rectangular bar at the bottom of the screen, featuring multiple cards that can be scrolled vertically with a smooth animation resembling a card deck.

Both Now Brief and Now Bar are fueled by Samsung’s Personal Data Engine. The organization describes this AI system as a personal large language model (LLM) that gathers data from the user’s daily interactions and routines. This information is then leveraged to curate a tailored experience for users, with the assurance that all data is stored solely on the device.

Another comprehensive AI capability is known as AI Select. This feature serves as Samsung’s alternative to Circle to Search, enabling users to receive AI-driven suggestions based on visual content displayed on their screens. For example, when utilizing AI Select in a messaging application, the tool activates Writing Assist along with its suite of AI-enhanced writing tools, all without requiring an Internet connection.

Moreover, AI Select allows users to convert portions of videos into GIFs. According to Samsung, users can select any specific part of a video while watching and trigger this feature to instantly generate a GIF.

Samsung has also streamlined the process of navigating Settings and locating specific images within the Gallery. Labeled Conversational AI, this feature enables users to utilize natural language in the search functionalities of both Settings and Gallery to pinpoint the exact item they are seeking, supporting both text and voice queries.

During the presentation, an example showcased how a user could tell the AI “My eyes are sore” in Settings, with the AI promptly opening the Blue Light Filter option. Additionally, when asking the AI to locate “A photo of Max from last winter in a red coat, eating cake,” it accurately identified that Max is a dog, isolating images from that period that meet the criteria. Samsung assured users that this feature operates entirely on-device.

Drawing Assist is also receiving enhancements. The updated Sketch to Image feature supports multimodal input, allowing users to create images using both doodles and optional text prompts. Samsung claims these upgrades will empower users to craft artwork that may have previously been difficult to visualize.

Galaxy AI Features: Cameras and Editing

In addition to the comprehensive device-wide features, Samsung has unveiled several AI-powered upgrades specifically designed for camera functionalities, as well as enhancements for photo and video editing.

Utilizing AI technology, Samsung is enabling users to personalize the aesthetics of their photos. By selecting any existing image, the AI can assess various parameters such as colour tone, saturation, and brightness, replicating these attributes in the desired photo. This new offering is referred to as Personal Filter.

AI enhancements are also being incorporated into video recording capabilities. Samsung reported that the technology now possesses the ability to identify and separate moving from stationary objects within a video, applying distinct noise reduction techniques to each. This improvement aims to enhance the clarity and detail of low-light recordings, according to the company.

Audio Eraser, another innovative feature launched under Galaxy AI, can analyze and isolate sounds in a video according to their sources. Once sounds are separated, users gain the flexibility to adjust the volume of each isolated channel independently, thus allowing them to minimize background noise and amplify dialogue in a video recorded in a crowded setting.
