OpenAI has begun the rollout of its latest multimodal GPT AI models to ChatGPT, introducing GPT-4.1 to all paid account tiers. Announced on Wednesday, this update is accessible to Plus, Pro, and Team users, who can find it within the model picker dropdown menu. However, free account holders will not have access at this time. OpenAI indicated that users in Enterprise and Educational tiers will gain access to GPT-4.1 in the near future.

Furthermore, the previous model, GPT-4o mini, is being replaced by the more efficient GPT-4.1 mini, which will serve as the default for all users, including those with free accounts. Paid users will also see this transition in their model picker options.

The new models, GPT-4.1 and GPT‑4.1 mini, are specifically designed for coding tasks and following instructions, demonstrating superior performance compared to both GPT‑4o and GPT‑4o mini. One notable enhancement is the substantial increase in context token capacity, with the new models supporting a one million token window, a significant upgrade from GPT-4o’s limit of 128,000 tokens. Additionally, improvements in processing speed make GPT-4.1 an attractive option for daily coding tasks when compared to OpenAI’s earlier o3 and o4-mini reasoning models released in April.

Developers received access to GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini last month, along with the introduction of the GPT-4.1 nano model, which OpenAI labeled as its “smallest, fastest, and cheapest” AI offering. However, GPT-4.1 Nano is not included in this latest rollout announcement, leaving its general availability within ChatGPT uncertain.
