The platform X, previously known as Twitter, is set to introduce audio and video calling capabilities. Last month, Elon Musk, who acquired the social media site in October 2022, announced via Twitter that this feature would be available across devices, including iOS, Android, Mac, and PC, without requiring users to provide a phone number. However, it appears that not all users will have access to this anticipated feature. Leaked screenshots from X’s code indicate that audio and video calling may be restricted to X Premium subscribers only.

Investor Chris Messina shared these code screenshots on the competitive platform Threads, where the details suggest that users will be able to initiate calls with contacts, followers, and verified users. The information contained in the screenshots implies that individuals will have the option to manage their call preferences, allowing them to choose who can reach them through this feature. According to the code description, “Take messaging to the next level with audio and video calls. Turn the feature on and then select who you’re comfortable using it with.”

Furthermore, a second screenshot offers insights into the potential premium nature of this calling service, indicating that audio and video calls are a feature reserved for subscribers. Text from the code states, “Audio and video calls are a premium feature. Subscribe to get access,” and mentions that users will need a premium subscription to engage in calls if they hit a message limit.

X Premium, which launched as Twitter Blue, enhances the platform with various benefits for paying members. These include the verification badge, fewer ads, extended post length, and the option to edit posts. The subscription pricing varies across platforms: it costs $8 per month or $84 annually on the web (approximately Rs. 650/month or Rs. 6,800/year), while subscriptions on iOS and Android are priced at $11 monthly or $114.99 yearly (about Rs. 900/month or Rs. 9,400/year).

Elon Musk aims to evolve X into an “everything app” akin to China’s WeChat, integrating social networking, voice and video communication, and even payment services. Recently, during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Musk suggested implementing a nominal monthly fee for users of the platform to help counteract bots that may contribute to hate speech.
