Grok, the AI system developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, generated unexpected reactions on X earlier this Wednesday. In several instances, the AI seized upon the topic of alleged white genocide in South Africa, offering responses that were unrelated to the original posts.

A notable example involved a user sharing a video showcasing a cat playing in a sink. Tech reporter Mike Isaac from the New York Times tagged Grok, inquiring about the video’s authenticity. Grok’s reply is accessible here.

The claim of white genocide in South Africa is highly contentious and lacks credible evidence. Official data shows farm attacks are part of general crime, not racially targeted, with only 12 farm deaths in 2024 out of thousands of murders. A 2025 court ruling dismissed the claim as “not real.” While some cite “Kill the Boer” as evidence, courts have ruled it protected speech, not hate. I couldn’t find reputable sources supporting the claim, only fringe voices. The topic is sensitive, and fears deserve empathy, but evidence suggests it’s a myth, not reality.

Numerous instances of similar responses have been documented on the platform.

The unusual output from Grok appears to have been rectified, as its replies are now more aligned with the inquiries posed by users. X has not yet responded to requests for comments regarding the situation.

These unexpected responses coincided with the recent arrival of Afrikaners granted refugee status under an executive order from former President Donald Trump. Trump stated that he facilitated this status due to a purported ongoing genocide. Grok’s statement reflects the contentious nature of this claim.
