WhatsApp has initiated testing of a new feature that lets users pin messages within group chats on its latest beta version. Individuals participating in the beta phase can now keep a message anchored at the top of a group conversation for a period of up to 30 days. In addition, the popular messaging platform is developing a username selection feature and an option aimed at enhancing user privacy during calls, as reported by a feature tracker.

The update, found in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.23.21.4, enables beta users to pin chats to the top of group conversations. The feature was identified by WABetaInfo and is currently operational for a select group of users who have installed the most recent testing version of the app. By long-pressing on a message, users can choose a new Pin option, keeping the message displayed prominently at the top of the chat interface, even amid ongoing conversations.

While pinning a message, users can select its duration—options include 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days. Users retain the capability to unpin any message at their discretion. This beta update also introduces a revamped share sheet with updated design elements that are being integrated into various sections of the chat interface.

Addressing privacy concerns associated with voice and video calls, WhatsApp is working on a new feature named Protect IP address in calls, as reported by WABetaInfo on iOS beta version 2.23.20.73. This feature aims to prevent exposure of a user’s IP address during calls by routing them through the company’s server.

While this feature offers enhanced privacy, users are warned that enabling it may slightly reduce call quality. Notably, similar functionality has long been available on another private messaging platform, Signal.

Additionally, WhatsApp has been seen working on a new username picker in its beta version for iOS. This upcoming feature will allow users to select and share unique usernames with others on the platform, facilitating communication without the need to disclose phone numbers.

Choosing a username will be optional and will accept letters, numbers, and certain special characters, according to WABetaInfo. Each username will be unique, and it seems users will be given the opportunity to change their selected username. However, no timeline has been provided regarding the rollout of these features to the stable version of the app.
