Spotify is enhancing the functionality of its AI DJ feature by allowing users increased control over song selection. Effective immediately, Spotify Premium subscribers can issue voice commands in English to customize the musical experience instead of depending solely on the dynamic playlists curated by the platform.
To utilize the new feature, users simply need to press and hold the ‘DJ’ button in the bottom right corner of the screen and wait for a beep. This allows them to communicate directly with the DJ bot, making requests such as, “play me some electronic beats for a midday run,” or “surprise me with some indie tracks I’ve never heard before.”
Previously, the DJ button offered little more than a random track change, offering no ability for users to influence upcoming songs. With this update, Spotify empowers users to direct their listening experience by specifying artists, genres, and preferred moods. The AI DJ also incorporates some of the creative music suggestions from its AI Playlist feature, which was introduced in beta last year. Users can even instruct the DJ to, “play me some music to soundtrack my life as a movie.”
Currently, voice commands are the only way for users to influence the AI DJ’s playlist. This limitation may present challenges for users who are in situations where speaking freely is not feasible.
