Elon Musk announced on Sunday that his artificial intelligence venture, xAI, will be integrated into his social media platform X, and will also be offered as a standalone application.
In his post, the billionaire revealed that xAI has launched its inaugural AI model named Grok, which became accessible to all X Premium+ subscribers as of Friday.
The goal of xAI is to develop AI tools that support humanity’s pursuit of enlightenment and knowledge. Grok, in particular, is engineered to provide answers infused with a touch of humor.
Musk, who has been vocal about his criticisms of major tech companies regarding their AI practices, founded xAI in July, describing it as a “maximum truth-seeking AI.” This initiative aims to understand the universe’s complexities, competing with AI models like Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing AI.
“Grok has real-time access to information via the X platform, giving it a significant advantage over other models,” Musk stated.
While X, previously known as Twitter, operates independently of xAI, the two entities maintain a collaborative relationship. xAI also partners with Musk’s electric vehicle company, Tesla, and other ventures he is involved in.
During a recent discussion with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Musk expressed his belief that AI represents “the most disruptive force in history.” He speculated that the technology could potentially transform employment as we know it today, stating it would be capable of “doing everything” at the first global AI Safety Summit in Bletchley Park, England.
Musk was a co-founder of OpenAI in 2015, the organization responsible for ChatGPT, which has spurred widespread interest in generative AI technology. However, he stepped down from the board in 2018.
