OpenAI has informed its investors of a decision to reduce the percentage of revenue shared with its principal investor, Microsoft, amid ongoing restructuring efforts, according to a report from The Information published on Tuesday.

The developer of ChatGPT has scaled back its ambitious restructuring plan, with the organization’s nonprofit parent continuing to maintain oversight. This shift is expected to restrict CEO Sam Altman’s influence within the company.

In financial forecasts presented to investors, OpenAI revealed that the share of revenue allocated to Microsoft is set to decline by at least 50% by the end of the decade, the report indicated.

Under the current agreement, OpenAI is committed to sharing 20% of its revenue with Microsoft through the year 2030, as detailed by The Information.

In communications with select investors, OpenAI indicated that it plans to limit revenue sharing with commercial partners, including Microsoft, to just 10% by 2030. The report noted that Microsoft is seeking continued access to OpenAI’s technology beyond that timeframe.

In January, Microsoft altered key elements of its agreement with OpenAI following its collaboration with Oracle and Japan’s SoftBank Group, aimed at creating up to $500 billion in new artificial intelligence data centers across the U.S.

Microsoft has stated that its partnership with OpenAI includes reciprocal revenue-sharing agreements, with the fundamental aspects of their collaboration remaining intact until the end of the contract in 2030.

An OpenAI spokesperson stated, “We continue to work closely with Microsoft, and look forward to finalizing the details of this recapitalization in the near future,” as reported by The Information.

Microsoft has opted not to comment on the latest report, while OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters outside of business hours.
