88 Games, a game development studio based in Bengaluru, has officially announced its first title, Kapih, an action platformer inspired by Indian folklore. The exact release date remains undisclosed, but the game is anticipated to be available on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X.
Introduction of Kapih: An Indian Action Platformer
The narrative of Kapih is set against the epic tale of Ramayana, centering on Vaanar, a young monkey embarking on a quest following the destruction of his village. Alongside the announcement, 88 Games released a trailer showcasing gameplay, highlighting the Indian cultural setting and cooperative gameplay features.
The trailer presents a range of traditional action platforming elements, offering run-and-gun mechanics across various levels influenced by Indian legends. Players will encounter challenging boss battles reminiscent of those found in Cuphead, as Vaanar faces a multitude of creatures and monsters. Additionally, Vaanar will be joined by his companion, Bindu, who can be controlled by a second player in cooperative mode.
“Kapih promises an exhilarating, fast-paced adventure packed with platforming challenges and dynamic combat. Gamers will traverse an array of meticulously designed stages, each with its own unique gameplay twists,” stated 88 Games in a press release. The studio further explained that while the core experience revolves around run-and-gun action, Kapih will also introduce complementary modes, including horizontal shoot-em-up sequences and sections involving vehicles.
As players advance through the levels, they will have the chance to discover new weapons and power-ups. The artistic style of the game draws from traditional Indian art forms, such as Kalamkari, Thanjavur, Warli, and Madhubani. “From intricately hand-drawn villages to vibrant landscapes infused with mandala patterns, every detail has been thoughtfully crafted to encapsulate the rich cultural tapestry of India,” remarked 88 Games.
Kapih can be wishlisted on Steam and Epic Games Store, and it is confirmed to be released on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X.
