The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards took place on Sunday night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, honoring the finest achievements in American television. This year’s event spotlighted a range of beloved shows and talented individuals across various categories including acting, writing, and directing.

Leading the winners was FX’s historical drama, Shōgun, which tells the story of an Englishman who becomes a Samurai in feudal Japan. The series clinched a remarkable number of awards, securing wins in four key categories: Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, with Hiroyuki Sanada making history as the first Japanese actor to receive the latter award. In total, Shōgun achieved 18 Emmy wins—14 of which were awarded at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards earlier this month—setting a new record for the most awards for a single season in Emmy history.

In the comedy realm, Jeremy Allen White’s The Bear, which has been on air for three seasons, fell short in the Outstanding Comedy Series category. However, the show still garnered notable accolades, winning four major awards: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, adding to its total of 11 wins across various categories.

The Bear’s past success was overshadowed by Hacks, which triumphed in the Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series categories. Jean Smart’s victory marks her third time winning for the same role in the series.

Despite not winning in the top categories, The Bear made history by becoming the comedy series with the most Emmy Awards in a single year, totaling 21 wins. This also included 10 awards from the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards held earlier this year, a ceremony that had been postponed due to the Hollywood actors’ and writers’ strikes.

Moreover, British dark comedy Baby Reindeer also shone during the ceremony, capturing four Emmys for a total of six wins. The series focuses on a comedian who deals with an obsessive admirer and draws inspiration from lead actor Richard Gadd’s personal experiences with stalking and abuse.

Among the returning champions were HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, awarded Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, and Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, which took home Outstanding Talk Series. Both programs are recognized for their unique approaches to delivering news with a comedic perspective.

Other notable winners included The Morning Show, The Crown, The Traitors, Ripley, Fargo, Slow Horses, True Detective: Night Country, and Alex Edelman: Just For Us.

Acclaimed screenwriter and producer Greg Berlanti was honored with the Governor’s Award for his substantial contributions to the television industry. Berlanti is known for his work on popular shows such as You, Riverdale, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, in addition to his extensive involvement in adapting DC Comics properties for television.
